Accelerated TMS

At our practice, we’re always looking for ways to offer the most effective treatments with the least disruption to your life. One of the most exciting advancements in mental health care is Accelerated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Unlike standard TMS, which typically involves one session per day over several weeks, Accelerated TMS condenses multiple sessions into a single day, helping you achieve comparable results much more quickly.

One of the most exciting advancements in psychiatry in our career has been the speed and effectiveness of TMS however now life-changing this approach can be completed in as little as 5 days. Accelerated TMS will be a game changer in psychiatry and we are excited to provide it to the Rochester area.

Recent Advances in Accelerated TMS Research

  • The SAINT Protocol
In recent years, we’ve seen significant breakthroughs in the field of TMS, particularly with the development of the Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy (SAINT) protocol. This approach utilized for multiple TMS sessions in a single day, leading to extremely fast results with response and remission occurring during the treatment course of 5 days.

Accelerated TMS vs. Conventional TMS

When considering TMS, it's important to understand the key differences between Accelerated TMS and Conventional TMS, as each has its unique benefits.

  • Treatment Duration
Accelerated TMS delivers multiple sessions in a single day, often for five days straight, resulting in faster symptom relief. Conventional TMS, on the other hand, typically involves one session per day over the course of six weeks with a taper following this.

  • Timeline for Results
Patients who opt for Accelerated TMS can often feel a noticeable improvement in their symptoms within days, as opposed to the several weeks it can take with conventional TMS. If you’re looking for faster relief, Accelerated TMS might be the right choice for you.

  • Patient Experience
Accelerated TMS is more intensive but condensed into a shorter period, which can be ideal for patients who want to commit to treatment and move on with their lives as quickly as possible. For others, Conventional TMS provides a more gradual process, which can be integrated more easily into daily routines and provides time to adjust to the stimulation.

  • Ideal Candidates
Accelerated TMS is perfect for individuals who want or need rapid relief or have the flexibility to dedicate time to intensive treatment. Conventional TMS is an excellent option for those who prefer a slower, steadier pace or can’t commit to the intensity of multiple daily sessions.

Who Can Benefit from Accelerated TMS?

If you’re someone who’s been struggling with mental health conditions like depression and haven’t found relief with medications or talk therapy, you may be an ideal candidate for Accelerated TMS. This treatment is particularly beneficial for those:

  • Seeking rapid relief from their symptoms.
  • Individuals with busy schedules who want to condense treatment into a shorter timeframe.
  • Those who have experienced limited success with medication or other forms of therapy.

Our team will conduct a comprehensive pre-screening and assessment to determine if Accelerated TMS is a good fit for you. We’ll look at your medical history, previous treatments, and current symptoms to create a personalized plan that meets your needs.

What to Expect During Treatment

Accelerated TMS can seem intense, but the process is not significantly different than conventional TMS other than the significantly increased number of pulses delivered each day. Here’s what a typical day looks like:

  • Day-by-Day Breakdown
On treatment days, you’ll come in for multiple 20-minute sessions spaced out throughout the day, usually over five to ten consecutive days. Between sessions, you’re free to relax in our comfortable waiting area or enjoy our proximity to sites in Rochester. If you are out of town we are happy to help direct you to excellent food and lodging.

  • Recovery and Aftercare
There’s no downtime required after each session or the full course. You’ll be able to return to normal activities, like work or school, almost immediately. The most common side effect is mild scalp discomfort or a headache, but these usually subside within a day following the final treatment and are generally managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

  • Potential Side Effects
Side effects with Accelerated TMS are similar to conventional TMS. Most patients report mild discomfort during treatment or transient headaches, but these tend to improve after the first few sessions and are very time limited. The treatment is very well-tolerated, and serious side effects are extremely rare.

Cost and Insurance Information

One of the biggest questions many patients have is, "How much does it cost?"

Unfortunately, the cost of Accelerated TMS is not usually covered by insurance at this point. We do accept a range of insurance plans, and we’re happy to explore if this may be a covered service.

If this is not covered and you are interested in self pay, we will provide a detailed breakdown of the costs during your initial consultation, and we offer flexible payment options for those paying out of pocket.
